Twenty-five children from Masakhane in the Overstrand are now attending a new Early Childhood Development Centre called Good Hope – through collaboration between the local community, the Flower Valley Early Childhood Development (ECD) Programme and the Overstrand Municipality.
Children from naught to four years old moved to the Overstrand Municipality’s Training Institute in Masakhane in March. They had previously received care in informal dwellings, which struggled to meet health and safety minimum requirements.
According to the Flower Valley ECD Programme Coordinator Gabrielle Jonker, “The Masakhane Centre is part of a bigger initiative under the Flower Valley ECD Programme, to support and facilitate access to ECD in Gansbaai and the surrounding areas.”
The development in Masakhane forms part of the second phase of a three-phase initiative that aims to increase access to quality ECD opportunities for children in Masakhane. Municipal figures suggest that up to 4000 children aged up to five have no access to early childhood development in the Overstrand. In Masakhane alone, around 600 children are in need of access to ECD services.
She says, “Accessing and maintaining quality ECD in marginalised areas is a great challenge. Without the collaborative efforts of government and non governmental organisations, we would not see progress. A step by step approach is required to tackle the many challenges one faces on the ground. The Good Hope ECD Centre is an excellent example of such collaboration. We have a long way to go, but I am happy to report that the steps we have taken are positive and the children are already benefitting.”
When Flower Valley started to support five ECD centres in March last year, through the Flower Valley ECD Programme, the registration process was between naught and 20 percent complete. Through the programme, the registration process is approximately 90 percent complete. Registration standards and requirements are set by the Department of Social Development and the Department of Health in accordance with the Children’s Act.

Flower Valley features in the current edition of Veld & Flora magazine. The feature highlights six-year research undertaken by the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI), which sought to look at the impacts of harvesting on different fynbos species. The research for example found that re-sprouters such as Silver Brunia have a high mortality when the whole plant is harvested.

The two major industry bodies in the fynbos sector are set to amalgamate. South African
Flower Valley’s Programme Assistant Londeka Zondi attended the PPSA/SAPPEX special annual general meeting, with Thys Basson, a member of the Sustainable Harvesting Steering Committee.
Protea Producers and Exporters Association (SAPPEX) will disband and the Protea Producers of South Africa (PPSA) will be tailored to serve the whole industry as a new organisation to be known as Cape Flora SA.
This decision was taken at a special Annual General Meeting, held in March near Riviersonderend. Members of both organisations agreed to the proposal, which will see the new company registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC).
Cape Flora SA will be registered as a Non-Profit Company (NPC). While the PPSA had already itself been registered as a Section 21 company, SAPPEX was an association. According to the SAPPEX board in a list of resolutions compiled for members to vote on, the decision to amalgamate would allow the new non-profit company to meet the needs of the industry better than in the past. It notes that the fynbos industry is experiencing changing trends and operational requirements. As such, the NPC would be able to take these into consideration for the benefit of the industry as a whole.
The current committee members of the PPSA and SAPPEX will initially serve as the directors for Cape Flora SA, until the annual general meeting is held later this year.
Flower Valley Conservation Trust has appointed a new Financial Manager, Liami van Wyk.
Liami will now take on the financial and administrative duties of the Trust.
Liami spent more than five years working for Floraland in Bredasdorp, and as such, is already a fynbos expert. She has also worked as an accountant for various companies, including Keerom Toyota in Villiersdorp and Dennebos Farm Vyeboom, also in Villiersdorp. All in all, she has nearly three decades worth of experience in finance and administrative roles.

Flower Valley Conservation Trust (FVCT) is a registered Public Benefit Organisation, based on Flower Valley Farm, outside Gansbaai in the Overstrand.
The Trust is now advertising for two positions for the next three years: a) Coordinator: Conservation Extension and Applied Research and b) Ethical Trade Coordinator. The positions will either be based in Bredasdorp, or at Flower Valley Farm.
a) Coordinator: Conservation Extension and Applied Research
The responsibilities of the position include:
1. Coordinate with stakeholders to develop the Flower Valley Sustainable Harvesting Programme’s (SHP) monitoring and research agenda, publicise agenda and integrate results into the SHP.
2. Forge close associations with landowners and harvesters to champion best practice land management and sustainable use within the SHP.
3. Oversee collection of data for the SHP database, and provide data analysis.
4. Coordinate working groups to update and develop new vulnerability indices.
5. Carry out resource-based assessments in partnership with landowners.
6. Carry out pre-audit support to land users and harvesters around meeting good land management practice compliance.
7. Share lessons and report on outcomes at relevant forums.
Minimum qualifications & experience:
• Graduate or equivalent qualification in Natural Resource Management, Biodiversity Conservation, Resource Economics and Extension Services.
• 5 years relevant experience in Conservation or Natural Resource Management Extension work.
• Preference given to candidates with experience in interacting with role players in the fields of Natural Resource Management, Biodiversity Conservation and Agricultural Best Practice.
• Preference given to a candidate who has coordinated monitoring and research strategies, and who can interpret data for publication.
• Computer literacy; mapping skills.
• Valid driver’s license.
b) Ethical Trade Coordinator
The responsibilities of the position include:
1. Work closely with fynbos industry representatives and organisations to further develop the Sustainable Harvesting Programme (SHP) to be viable to producers and attractive to the market.
2. Market the programme to producers and retailers.
3. Negotiate with third-party audit companies to build their capacity to undertake audits based on the Code of Best Practice.
4. Represent the programme at appropriate forums and meetings.
5. Work with fynbos suppliers where appropriate to further encourage social and labour best practice compliance.
6. Undertake basic awareness raising of the SHP with relevant stakeholders.
7. Work closely with the Coordinator: Conservation Extension and Applied Research to ensure the SHP’s ethical trade declarations are measurable.
Minimum qualifications & experience:
• Graduate or equivalent qualifications in particular from the field of sustainability, ethical trade, corporate responsibility, or a related field.
• 5 years relevant experience in ethical trade or corporate responsibility project management;
• Or 5 years marketing and supply chain management experience.
• Computer literacy.
• Valid driver’s license.
A market-related salary will be negotiated, dependent on qualifications and experience, for both positions.

Flower Valley’s Pre-school has entered 2014 with a full house. The school is currently offering its environmental education curriculum to 19 children. The children come from small towns and rural areas in the Strandveld region, including Gansbaai, Blompark and Masekhane.
The Pre-school has two classes: for children aged two to four, and the Grade R class (the year before primary school). As the school belongs to the Wessa Eco-Schools Programme, it ensures they are introduced to environmental themes and issues from a young age. The Flower Valley Pre-school is the longest serving Eco-Schools member in the entire Overberg. Eco-Schools themes include: Nature and Biodiversity, Healthy Living and the Use of Natural Resource.
The Pre-school will also this year serve as a demonstration site under the Flower Valley Early Childhood Development Programme. As a result, the school will serve as a learning hub for other schools, allowing teachers and scholars who form part of the programme to visit the school and learn from its activities.
