Another Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Masakhane is receiving support from Flower Valley Conservation Trust, through its ECD Programme. The Takalani Centre in Masakhane provides care and education for 23 children in this community.
The ECD Programme aims to support the development of ECD Centres. Support includes management and governance, professional development, infrastructure development, registration with the Department of Social Development, and the training and implementation of the the Milkwood Learning Programme. This programme is now being used to provide a holistic education with environmental education integration to children under the age of five.
The Takalani Centre is now the second ECD site in Masakhane to receive support from Flower Valley’s programme. The first Masakhane centre, The Good Hope Early Childhood Development Centre, serves 43 children, with five educators. Masakhane, a neighbourhood of Gansbaai, is in need of ECD facilities for children. It’s estimated around 600 children here have no access to ECD services prior to primary school.
The Trust is also in the process of working toward a Family in Focus programme in Baardskeerdersbos. Family in Focus provides family-centred home-based care for children with no access to centre-based ECD. The programme is a social franchise of the Foundation for Community Work, who will be an active partner when this programme kicks off.
The Flower Valley Early Childhood Development Programme is supported by the Western Cape Department of Social Development. The Overstrand Municipality and local communities have also played a vital role, by collaborating in various aspects of improving services to young children.
On top of this, donors and volunteers have also been crucial partners in supporting the programme. Donations of household items that are no longer used in the home, from toys, books, carpets, kitchen utensils, to blankets and clothes, have provided essential co-funding for activities.
Flower Valley has a recycling depot on Flower Valley Farm from which all items are either used for learning resource or monthly jumble sales, helping to pay educators’ salaries. Any further donations are most appreciated.
